How to Choose a Vibrator: Motor, Shape, Size and Material Explained
The differences that actually matter when choosing a vibrator: motor quality, shape, size, material, waterproofing and controls.
General educational information for adults 18+; not medical advice. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the specific product you own.
Most people shopping for a first vibrator are choosing between products that look similar online and feel very different in use. The differences that matter are motor quality, shape, size and material, not the number of settings printed on the box.
1. Motor: buzzy versus rumbly
Buzzy motors vibrate at a high, surface-level frequency. Rumbly motors are deeper and carry further into tissue. Most people describe rumbly as more satisfying and less numbing over time. You cannot reliably tell from a specification sheet, but build quality and price are a reasonable proxy: cheap motors are usually buzzy.
2. Shape
- Bullet. Small and focused, for external use. The classic first purchase.
- Wand. Broad head and a strong motor, external use. Powerful, so look for adjustable intensity.
- Curved. An angled tip intended for internal use. Best once you know what you like.
- Dual. Two motors, internal and external. More to coordinate on a first attempt.
- Palm or pebble. A flat, wide surface for broad stimulation.
3. Size
Smaller diameters are easier to insert comfortably and easier to learn with. Width matters more than length, and a modest size with a good motor outperforms a large toy with a weak one.
4. Material
Body-safe silicone and hard ABS plastic are the two reliable options. Both are non-porous and clean easily. Silicone is softer and warms to body temperature. ABS is firmer and is often used for bullets. Avoid porous materials that cannot be fully cleaned. Our care, cleaning and storage guide covers the routine.
5. Waterproofing and power
Waterproof is worth paying for even if you never use it in water, because it makes cleaning straightforward. Rechargeable magnetic or USB-C charging beats disposable batteries on cost and on consistent power as the charge drops.
6. Controls
A few well-spaced intensity levels are more useful than a long list of patterns. Look for controls that are easy to reach in use, and a travel lock if you will store it in a bag.
7. Price
One well-made mid-range toy with a quiet, rumbly motor is a better investment than two cheap ones. If you are unsure, buy one good bullet rather than three novelty items.
Putting it together
For a first purchase: a rechargeable, waterproof, body-safe silicone bullet or small wand with simple controls and moderate power, plus water-based lubricant in the same order.
